iPads came onto the market only in the spring of 2010. Within a year there are more than 20,000 apps available in education. However, highly sophisticated apps that can be tightly integrated into a curriculum typically require a development time that is longer than a year. Many of these early apps are text and data repositories or relatively elementary items in terms of interactivity. Consequently, lesson plans built on the unique interactivity iPad apps offer are not yet widespread, although there are some that work with multimedia creativity as an option in an array of student centered options. (See: Space Science http://ipad-space-science.wikispaces.com/Mission+Earth) At this point, it is useful to survey what is available with apps and know that it is early to expect as much from this area of iPad use as one might look for with textbooks or multimedia creativity.
Notes:
Some of these apps are very limited introductions to broader based apps that can be purchased. In your evaluation, consider what is offered as well as what you see in determining the potential utility of a particular app in the classroom. For example, an app might be ever so much more useful if the content could be teacher modified - as is the case for some of the purchased versions of the sample apps listed below.
In some cases, there are two or more apps that do something very similar. You may wish to compare the different approaches each app takes. Evaluate which strategy appeals to you more. Which app would be better for classroom use (and under what situations)?
Please do not review apps you already have used in other classes. The goal is to help you become acquainted with as many different apps as possible.
In general, one may want to prefer apps with lesson plans (although there are few initially, more lesson plans will be added as they are identified).
For the most part, it is best to review apps on page 2 of the iPads, as the page 1 (and dock) apps tend to be more general, without a specific education focus (even though a few are listed below).
Do not review apps that are not on the list below.
In CPED 5300, we will be doing Google Earth independently as a module in the GLUE track. Please do not review it in the iPads App module that this list supports.
